Famous Chinese Formula (4): Stomach Peace (Ganweishu)

Famous Chinese Formula (4): Stomach Peace?(Ganweishu) This formula combined several classic ones including one from the third century.

Ingredients: It is made of extracts of Chinese thorowax root (bupleuri), inmature orange, peony root, processed (ternate) pinellia, tangerine peel, coptis (golden thread), nutgrass galingale rhizome, corydalis, red sage root, and licorice.

Chinese Uses: In China this product is extensively used for gastritis, peptic ulcer, abdominal pain, hepatitis, cholecystitis, costal neuralgia, kidney stone, cystitis, epilepsy, neurasthenia, anti-shock, anti-arrhythmia, mastitis, otitis media, costal chondritis, obstruction of Fallopian tube, chronic annexitis, hyperthyroidism and impotence.

Research

China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine conducted pharmacodynamic research and found that this product has anti-convulsion, anti-ulcer, anti-virus, interferon inducing, sedation, antipyretic, hypertensive, anti-shock, anti-arrhythmia, cardiotonic, cerebral blood flow promoting, anti-platelet aggregation, in vitro thrombosis inhibition, liver protecting, detoxication, anti-inflammation and analgesia properties.

Anti-convulsion & anti-ulcer:Water extract alcohol precipitated form inhibits contraction of intestinal smooth muscle, slows down its frequency and shortens its amplitude. It also antagonizes the spasmodic contraction of intestine induced by acetylcholine and barium chloride. The formula is effective for experimental ulcer. When rat under ether anesthesia has fasted for 3 hours and pylorus ligated, infusion was conducted with alcohol extract of the formula into the duodenum, 8ml/kg, continued the fasting and interruption of water for another 12 hours, and then observed the ulcer in its stomach. Results show that the index of ulcer in the experimental group and difference of its average number are significantly different from that of the control group.

Anti-virus, inducing interferon: Decoction of this product reveals certain anti VSV viral ability in cellular culture, manifesting direct killing of virus, inhibition of viral proliferation, and protecting cells from viral attacks. It also promotes NDN induced interferon, with direct induction of its production.

Sedation & Antipyretic: 10% of this formula (0.1ml/10g) and 2.5% decoction of immature orange ( 0.1ml/10g) injected intraperitoneally, both strengthens the hypnotic action of sodium pentobarbital, indicating that they yield sedative action on CNS. When perfused into the stomach (20g/kg) at 20ºC room temperature, it lowers the normal body temperature in mice.

Liver protection, detoxication, anti-inflammation, analgesia: as single drug both bupleuri and licorice prevent liver injury. The latter also has detoxication action. Both, and poeny root yield anti-inflammation effects. Bupleuri is also an analgesic.

Toxicological studies:

High dosage injection peritoneally to rat each day for 20 days showed no changes in its body weight, GPT, and BUN.
