Native Americans called Black Cohosh "sqaw root", suggesting a rich tradition of use in maintaining womens reproductive health. Natives also called it "black snake root", becuase when the stalk is shaken the seeds will rattle, producing a sound like a rattlesnake.
Black Cohosh is associated with the rich deciduous forests of eastern north america and is a member of the butter-cup family. Its name is derived from an algonquin word associated with pregnancy. Today it is widely used in domestic practice for women.
